The Ultimate Checklist Of Resume Writing Tips
A resume may not seem to do so much when it comes to landing the perfect job. But when you think about it, this is actually the only way to make a good first impression, without being called for an interview just yet! One simple mistake on this paper could get it tossed aside and cost you an opportunity of a lifetime.

Check this checklist of Do’s and Don’ts that would help you create an impressive resume -too difficult to turn down.

DO’s

  1. Keep it Simple.
Use a modern but basic font, like Helvetica or Arial with a font size between 10 and 12 and refrain from using capital letters all over the place.
  2. Make it “Skim-friendly.”
Hiring managers won’t spend a lot of time on every resume. Thus, a couple of formatting changes to help them quickly get as much information as possible will go a long way.
  3. Keep it Recent and Relevant.
Include only the most recent 10-15 years of your work history and make sure to include only those experiences relevant to the positions to which you are applying.
  4. Use Keywords.
Check the job description and look for words that are often used. Use the same words and mention them on your bullet entries and you will surely get noticed in applicant tracking systems.
  5. Use bullet points.
The hiring manager surely won’t have the time or patience to read long paragraphs of text so use bullet points and short sentences only.
  6. Include an Online Supplement.
Include links to your online portfolio, blog or website to share some visual examples of your work to the hiring manager.
  7. Proofread using spell check and grammar check.
Polish your resume to make sure that it is free and clear of any typos, spelling error, and cringe-worthy grammar. Ask someone else to look at it for you for a more objective assessment.
  8. Get Help From a Professional.
There’s no shame in getting a little help from professional resume editors and designers.

DON’Ts

  1. Don’t Put Your Age.
A resume that tells a potential employer that you’re too young for the job might sound impressive to you but your future boss might not see it that way. Don’t risk it.
  2. No Short-Term Jobs
Eliminate a job that you stayed on for only a matter of months, as it won’t really add value to your resume.
  3. Don’t Show Gaps.
Don’t list the exact start and end dates for each position if you have gaps of a few months in your work history.
  4. No Pictures or Images
Unless you are applying for a job of modeling or acting or unless it is specifically requested, avoid attaching a picture to the resume.
  5. Never use colored background or fancy fonts.
If you want your resume to be taken seriously, avoid these at all costs. Simplicity is always the key.
  6. No Lies
White lies, small lies, and even a little exaggeration should be avoided. Most HR departments do background checks and more than losing a chance at the job, you might even ruin your credibility for good.
  7. Don’t send docs files.
If emailing or uploading your resume on a website, send a PDF file. That way all of your formatting and designing won’t get messed up when the file is opened in another computer.
