Answering Interview Questions Like a Pro

Anita • Oct 16, 2017

Do you still get nervous at the idea of being interviewed? Don’t worry, it’s normal. Who wouldn’t get butterflies in their stomach if it’s their dream job at stake, right? So it would be a big help if you know how to answer questions properly and organize your thoughts. The most valuable advice that you should never forget is to be careful – don’t give too much information. Always be discreet in discussing your previous jobs and employers; do not talk badly about them as it may give a wrong impression to the interviewer.

No matter how nervous you are, try to compose yourself. Remember that everything you do or say can affect the interviewer’s opinion about you. From the information you disclose to the non-verbal cues you give during the interview, all of these things will help determine if you get hired or not. These tips should help you ace any job interview that you may have in the future:

  •     Do your homework. Get all the information that you can about the company and the position you’re applying for. The more you know, the better you’ll be at answering the questions during the interview.
  •     Practice, practice, and practice. Remember the saying ‘Practice makes perfect?’, it will help you a lot in preparing for an interview. You can practice with anyone at home or a close friend. If you go through the common interview questions before your actual interview, you will feel more confident and comfortable.
  •     Review your cover letter and resume. Thinking that they know everything about themselves by heart, some people tend to overlook this tip. If you don’t have a perfect memory, take time to review the things you’ve written on your application. You may get a few raised eyebrows from your interviewer if what you say doesn’t match the things that you’ve written. So be sure that you know your work history, especially the when and where.
  •     Take your time and use the right words. Pause before answering a question. Compose your thoughts so you can respond effectively. After all, there is no rush during an interview. It will also help you avoid regretting anything you say. Try to use power words to create a positive and strong impression to your interviewer.
  •     Share your past accomplishments and give examples. Be proud of the good things that you have done in your previous work. Provide examples of how you’ve handled situations in the past to illustrate your skills and strengths. Just make sure that it is relevant to the position you’re applying for. It can help reinforce why you’re a perfect fit for the job.
  •     Don’t ramble and be direct. Speak clearly during your interview. Make your answers concise and avoid rambling. For example, if your interviewer asks why you left your previous company, give a direct answer. But remember to give positive replies and direct them towards the future. Your interviewer wouldn’t want to hear you whining about your bad experience.

Just keep these tips in mind, and you should do just fine during your job interview. There are many other things that you can do to add points to your scorecard – research is the key.
